Believe it or not one of the most popular and enjoyed video games online is Assault Cube, the multi-player free game for download that has a virtual army of players who enjoy a huge community of fans and friends. How many other FPS games like Assault Cube do you know off? Free, yet enjoyable to play.

This first person shooter was released in 2006 and is cross-platform from Rabid Viper Productions utilizing the Cube engine. It was originally called Action Cube way back in 2004. The name was changed later in 2007 and the game has been improved upon by fans ever since. Assault Cube has about 12 game modes such as Last Swiss Standing, Hunt The Flag, Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, Survivor and Team Survivor, Capture The Flag, Pistol Frenzy, Keep The Flag And Team Keep The Flag and more.

Because the game has the original in game mapping, fans have been able to modify, or create new maps indefinitely. This allows for clans to battle one another in a variety of environments and even so fine tuned as to look like one’s own neighborhood where you can shoot up the home-front to your heart’s delight.

There are a number of community sites that cater to the game allowing for players to gather as much of the latest information, downloads and more. This allows for expansion but at a level that leads to more compatibility amongst the community that polices itself so that the new maps and tools are true to the game and quality control. This is because the source code is available like zlib open source license. The game is only 40mb and it can be played even on outdated computer systems. Many people love using the original game on their original computers for the sake of nostalgia.

Because it’s open source the adventurous take their shots at map creation so you’re likely not to be bored anytime soon. You’ve got the Server options with demo recording, anti cheats, simplified server, chat options and more. A client that has IRCify, show server bandwidth quality in the server browser, alternate font menu support, you can start maps and demos via the CLI parameters and more.

Assault Cube has an in-game map editor that allows for moving the entire map in any direction, reduce the world size via mapshrink, mirror the chosen map via the x or y axis, rotate the chosen map in 90 degree increments and more.  There are more improvements that came in during 2010 to late but the information is really technical and specific, too much to list here.

These improvements are because every now and then a new developer jumps on board to add their mad skills to the game and fans just don’t know what to expect next. Fans know that developers do this because this is where a new developer who wants to show their skills can get a name for themselves by joining up with the Assault Cube team.

You can find the latest info on the Assault Cube development blog and get lots of information from the various fan sites and fan blogs.  Here you can make friends with developers and other gamers and might even get someone to make a map for you so that you and your friends can play in an environment familiar to you so that you can run around shooting, causing mayhem and blowing up stuff in every direction.

The developers have the game available for Windows 7, Vista, XP, and 2000, 98, and ME, Linux, Mac OS X 10.4 and higher.  Other operating systems may be able to accommodate the game but you need to check the files necessary. In addition there are a number of support manuals for any number of the configurations. Matter of fact, if you have friends, kids or students who wonder about video games, Assault Cube is a great place to start.

Even if you think you’re a know it all gamer, you might benefit by seeing how games are created and what’s called for in their development. It’s like getting that cool car and having your friends show up to show you how to trick it out into a mean street racer.

So all in all we’re talking about this game, Assault Cube that is small in size, easy to download and install, you can jump right in and start blasting away creating havoc and mayhem. The in-game map editor allows for manipulating your game into an imagination’s playground of monumental proportions. The lag time is practically nil which is always good to see. Good coding in play here.

You play fluidly and at levels of maniacal destruction to the equal of today’s 10 gigabyte monster games. You have a community of developers and game players who are constantly improving on the game and providing an environment of continual play that just won’t end. Given this, you can see why this free PC game continues to grow in popularity. It’s because the video game industry is now more powerful than the major motion picture industry raking in billions of dollars a year. There are fan clubs for video games, the characters, the performers and developers that rival if not surpass those of famous sports and entertainment celebrities.

Video game development employs thousands of people worldwide and provides incomes for far more. Getting in the industry is the dream of many but here with Assault Cube, a newbie can jump in and get started seeing what it takes to create a video game. Once they see how games are done they can then expand on their knowledge. Not only the mechanics but also the interaction with a gaming community.  Believe you me, a game’s community is its lifeblood. Those fans who buy the game expect certain things with each incarnation and the successful games listen to their fans.

So that’s why Assault Cube is so popular. Small, easy, free FPS, and packed full of fun, adventure, and opportunity. Assault Cube is free to download, and we think you should give it a go. You’ve got nothing to lose, but everything to gain from this free first person shooter game. Is it one the best FPS games out there for the PC? No, but it’s certainly worth a download!
